I graduated as a Chartered Physiotherapist from Essex University having worked as a Physiotherapy Assistant alongside my degree for adults and children with neurological conditions both in care homes and their home environments.

Before opening The Herts and Essex Therapy Clinic I worked both in private practice and the NHS as a musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapist, gaining a broad experience in sports and musculoskeletal injury treatment and prevention of all age groups as well as orthopaedic and post-operative rehabilitation.

Through my years of experience and being keen to maintain health and fitness I have gained a strong interest in Sports Injuries, Spinal Dysfunction and tendinopathies. More recently I have chosen to specialise in Womens Health and TMJ dysfunction due to personal experiences. My treatment specialities include IMS Needling and Shockwave Therapy.

Since qualifying I have undertaken a variety of post graduate training; including Spinal Manipulation, Kinesio and Traditional Taping, Acupuncture, Shockwave Therapy and Sports Massage.

I have been privileged to work and learn alongside talented and renowned physiotherapists within the sporting industry. Following my time in The NHS I went on to work at The Varney Practice established by Mike Varney who was Tottenham Hotspurs Physio for many years, I was managed by his amazingly talented son Steve Varney who previously worked within formula 1 and gave me the honour of having Rob Madden (Anthony Joshua’s Physio) as my mentor, these guys taught me everything I know and I will be eternally grateful for everything I learnt from them and their wealth of knowledge and experience.

I graduated as a chartered physiotherapist from the University of Hertfordshire in 1997. Before opening the Herts & Essex therapy clinic I worked extensively in an acute hospital setting gaining a wide knowledge base in intensive care, medical, surgical, orthopaedics, outpatients, elderly rehabilitation and on paediatric wards.

I then specialised in paediatrics working for several years in children’s centres, specialist centres for children with physical disabilities in both mainstream and special schools and in the community. Whilst working for the NHS I also worked in private practice for Spire healthcare, independently treating children and adults with neurological conditions and also working with older people in care homes and their home environment

Through my years of experience I have gained a strong interest in all aspects of Paediatrics but especially in Cerebral palsy and developmental delay. A large proportion of children and adults that I treat are case managed following litigation for problems around the time of birth or acquired brain injury.

I also have a special interest in the treatment of adults with cerebral palsy, upper limb rehabilitation in Stroke patients, elderly rehabilitation and Guillan Barre syndrome.

Since qualifying I have undertaken a variety of post graduate training: including Bobath treatment technique, saeboflex, conductive education, GMFM & Outcome measures, Hydrotherapy etc.

Since graduating in 2012 I have been working primarily in cardio and neuro rehabilitation before joining the Herts and Essex Therapy Clinic 3 years ago. Previous to becoming a physio I worked in the fitness industry for over 15 years as a health club manager, personal trainer and group fitness instructor.

My interest in physiotherapy began after finishing a Pilates course and began receiving physiotherapy referrals for all kinds of core/joint instabilities. I greatly enjoyed helping people by working with them to make the corrections they needed to improve their weaknesses/pain. Which, is what led me wanting to go back to university so I would be equipped to do even more for people than just teach exercises…and I haven’t look back since!

I graduated from Staffordshire University having studied BSc (hons) Sports Therapy. Alongside my 3-year degree, I had the opportunity to gain a vast amount of invaluable experience within professional and semi-professional football and clinical-based settings (including here at The Herts and Essex Therapy Clinic). I am also currently studying for a second degree, this time in Physiotherapy at the University of Essex.

Having the title of a ‘Sports Therapist’ can sometimes confuse many people and it doesn’t always mean that we can only treat ‘sports injuries’. Sports Therapists’ do specialise in ‘sports injuries’, however we aim to treat all varieties of musculoskeletal aches and pains not necessarily gained through playing sport.

Some of the conditions I can help you with include neck pain, frozen shoulder, tennis and golfers elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back pain, sciatica, hip and groin pain, knee injuries, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, tendinopathies, ligament sprains and muscular strains.

The treatment you may receive will differ depending on your injury, however the services I can provide you are Sports/Soft Tissue Massage, Spinal and Joint Mobilisations, Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling), Interferential Therapy, Therapeutic Ultrasound, Shockwave Therapy, Kinesiology Taping and Rehabilitation/Exercise Prescription.

Brilliant service, seeing Stephanie for knee trouble and first time a physio has actually looked to treat the symptoms as well as the injury - feeling great and getting so much more movement in my knee now without pain, easy and well structured exercises to do in between sessions to build strength too - fantastic 🙂

Aimee Monk

I am very happy to recommend steph to friends and family . I suffer with arthritis and ligament problems. Steph has always been great helping me. Very professional and always puts me at ease. My sister and husband also see Steph.

Antony Stratton

My 82 year old mother found herself in excruciating pain and immobile due to a trapped nerve in her back. After misdiagnosis by 3 GPs and no option for further referral offered, Steph was able to see her quickly, diagnose where the problem was and get her moving after the first session. After only 3 sessions she is almost fully mobile and almost pain free. We are so grateful to her and very impressed. Would definitely recommend.

Pippa Boutell

Have been a client of Steph for a few years, through work health scheme. She is a wonderful physio, her diagnosis are spot on, and she is aswesome at dealing with muscles in spasm using a unique (in my experience) Korean technique. Highly recomemnded!

Steph was brilliant at diagnosing my partner's back pain, treating and referring him on for the intervention he needed. Her referral got everything moving quickly and her treatment whilst waiting for further appointments eased his pain and made it manageable. Without Steph's help I'm pretty sure we would still be trying to find a solution. Fantastic!!!!!

Michelle Garvey

Steph was great from start to finish. She reviewed the injury fully, gave me a solid understanding of expectations and worked diligently to get me back to full fitness in super quick time. I was so surprised by the speed of my recovery - a testament to her work.

I have been visiting Steph at her clinic for lower back maintenance for a few years now and every time I am in severe pain she works her magic mainly using acupuncture. Steph is a lovely lady, always very helpful, professional, kind, efficient and most of all always has a warm welcoming smile on her face.

After so long of having back pain and telling my self I need to go to see Steph at the clinic, i can finally move when i wake up. Can’t believe I left it so long again. Stephanie is great at her job and amazing at diagnosing your problems and always improving her knowledge, can't recommend her enough .

Helen Ken Hudson

Stephanie is a great physio and has really helped me with my sciatica. She listens and explains what she is going to do. She is always reassuring, and never encourages you to come back for unnecessary sessions. I always recommend her and the clinic to anyone who needs help and everyone I have sent there is always full of praise.

Alice Hamley

I visited Steph and had a six week course for my sciatica, when I first went I was in a lot of pain finding it hard to sleep at night with the discomfort it caused. After the first treatment it improved a lot so continued for another five sessions. It has been so much better I would recommend to anybody who suffers with this to give acupuncture ago!

Lorraine Wickham

I must admit I had no faith that anything could be done, I had honestly tried the lot, I could not have been more wrong, thanks Steph top marks.

Michael Dellow

I first visited the clinic to see Steph with neck issues. I was so impressed with the treatment that I returned after suffering with sciatica. Steph diagnosed a lower back disc issue which an MRI by my doctor confirmed. I’ve recently had a course of shock wave therapy and I’ve now been pain free for over a week! I will definitely be returning if I ever have a flare up of pain.
